Why I Pursued USD's Nursing Informatics (MSN) program – Kerry's Story

Published on: November 16, 2020

A special thanks to Kerry Stack (RN, BSN, PHN, CPC-A), a candidate for the Master of Science in Nursing degree in Nursing Informatics at the University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, for taking the time to share her story.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have been a nurse since 2004 and currently work in an ambulatory clinic. I started my nursing career in the Emergency Department in a small town and since then have worked in clinics and ED’s, mainly in pediatrics. I've known I wanted to be a nurse since I was little; in fact I used to tell people I wanted to be a “baby doctor” until I learned the difference between a doctor and nurse.

What interested you in pursuing a career in nursing informatics?

The last hospital I worked at was switching to electronic health records and the individual hosting the training was a nurse. At that time, I had no idea that that was something a nurse could do. It got me thinking about how a nurse could help design, implement, and make suggestions on processes that would make electronic health care records easier.

What attracted you to the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Nursing Informatics program at the University of San Diego?

As I began researching Master’s programs, I decided USD was the school for me. The biggest thing that drew me to the program was the practicum placements (USD helps match students' skills and interests with tailored practicum placements), their reputation, and their respect in the San Diego community.

Why did you decide to enroll?

I had been out of the nursing field for six years and decided it was the best way to get back into nursing. USD also offers the Yellow Ribbon program from the Post 9/11 GI Bill and I am using that to help pay for school.

I am very happy with my decision to pursue the MSN Nursing Informatics program at USD. The program has been great and all of the professors are here for you (and very approachable).
